Moving is always crazy.

Between organizing everything, packing up, dealing with movers, you may find yourself overlooking the smaller details—like making sure your makeup bag is ready to go.

Trust me, nobody wants to dig through boxes full of towels and toiletries just to find your favorite lipstick when you arrive at your new place.

Fortunately, we’ve got some helpful tips for packing a makeup bag when you move.

Not only will this prevent you having to dig through a lot of stuff, but you can also make sure everything stays in good condition throughout the move.

Start With a Clean Slate

It’s a good idea to clean your makeup products before you start thinking about packing them up.

Why?

Because you don’t want to go to all the trouble of moving into a new house only to bring dirty stuff into it.

Use a damp cloth to wipe down your products and wash your brushes with a gentle cleanser. This way, everything starts fresh, and you won’t feel the need to clean everything the moment you unpack.

Not to mention, cleaning your tools regularly keeps them in good shape and your skin happy.

Only Pack What You’ll Actually Use

One of the biggest steps is one that I had to learn the hard way. Please resist the temptation to dump your makeup collection into a single bag and call it packed.

You want to experience a stress-free move, and while this seems easier, it can be more challenging in the long run.

Think about your current routine and the products you usually apply every day—foundation, mascara, blush, maybe a neutral eyeshadow palette.

You should narrow it down to the essentials—stuff you use every day or multiple times a week.

Invest in a Travel-Friendly Case

One tip for packing a makeup bag when you move is to invest in a sturdy, condensed carrying case.

Try to find one with padding and has dividers to organize and protect your makeup. I’ve learned that tossing my makeup into an old cosmetic bag often leads to crushed powders or spilled foundations.

Compact cases with individual slots for brushes or lipstick can make a world of difference. If you don’t have one, even using Ziploc bags for smaller items like eyeliners or travel-size toiletries could work in a pinch.

Protect Your Makeup From Damage

The last thing you want is to open your makeup bag and find your favorite bronzer shattered into pieces. Avoid this by adding a layer of padding around anything fragile. I recommend using cotton rounds, tissues, or other padding that’s just stuff you’re likely to need anyway.

Double-check that you tightly seal the lids on all liquid foundations or creams to prevent leaks. I also like to stash my makeup bag in my purse or moving-day essentials bag, so it stays with me during the move, rather than getting lost among the larger boxes.

Packing a makeup bag might seem like a small task compared to the bigger challenges of moving, but trust me, a little preparation goes a long way.

Now that you're all set, take one less thing off your plate and enjoy settling into your new space—looking fabulous, of course!
