Face oils are great for providing your skin with the moisture and healthy fats it needs to repair cells and reveal youthful, glowing skin.

But in order to get all the benefits out of your face oil, you need to use it the right way.

If you don’t, you may be wasting your money or end up feeling like a greasy mess.

To help, here’s how to properly use face oils in your skincare routine.

Don’t Skip the Moisturizer

One of the most common misconceptions about face oil is that you don’t need moisturizer, but it’s actually the exact opposite.

In truth, you should be applying your face oil after you’ve let your moisturizer absorb into your skin to add an extra layer of protection.

If you use your face oil during the day, there is plenty of time for it to sink in; however, be sure to let your moisturizer and face oil absorb as much as you can before going to bed if you apply them at night.

Focus on Your Skin’s Needs

Some people will tell you to apply your face oil during the day, while others will suggest it’s best to do at night.

Ultimately, it depends on your skin type.

If you have dry skin, you’ll benefit from adding a few extra drops of face oil to your routine during the day.

However, sebum production is at its lowest before bedtime, so oily skin types should focus on applying the oil at night. Additionally, those with dry skin should apply oil for a second time before bed.

Your skin’s needs will also affect the order in which you apply your face oil.

While it should always be after your moisturizer and before your makeup, don’t put oil after your SPF if you have dry skin.

Your SPF, especially if it’s mineral based, may create a layer that is difficult for the oil to penetrate, meaning your skin won’t get the most out of it.

Remember That a Little Goes a Long Way

In order to avoid skin that feels greasy, only apply two or three drops of your selected oil.

While some oils may feel thinner than others, you’ll be fine as long as you apply your oil the right way.

To correctly apply face oil, make sure your hands are clean and use the dropper to place a few drops on your skin.

Avoid rubbing or massaging the oil into your skin like you’re using a cleanser, as that will just slide the oil around.

To ensure your skin is actually absorbing the oil, pat or dab it onto the skin to push the oil into your pores.

Knowing how to properly use face oils in your skincare routine is critical for building the perfect routine to meet your skin’s needs and goals.

Just remember, allergic reactions can happen, and they can be disconcerting.

Always test any new product on the back of your hand before your first application.
