Firstly, what is a Medical Spa?

You may have heard them being referred to as med spa or medispa. Basically they are like a day spa but combined with some longer lasting medical procedures that you would normally undertake in a doctor’s surgery or office.

The idea of a med spa is that you attend one just like a day spa and enjoy the benefits but undergo medical treatments in a more comfortable surrounding than a surgery. They tend to focus on anti-ageing treatments.

Med spas are becoming more popular and can help improve your appearance and are generally within the budget of the average person. So what treatments could you expect to see offered in a med spa and which ones are the most popular?

Botox and Fillers

Botox has been around for quite a few years now and its popularity continues. Botox or botulinum toxin is injected into facial muscles to improve the appearance of frown lines or crow’s feet for instance. It is used by normal people and movie stars alike and is a very commonplace and popular treatment.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels can be used on the face as well as the hands and neck. They are used to improve the appearance of the skin and make its surface less wrinkled, smoother, softer and more vibrant than before.

The process involves a chemical solution being prepared and applied to the skin. This causes the skin to slowly and gradually peel away with an exfoliating process.

Laser Hair Removal

Unsightly or unwanted hair can be removed for an extended period of time with this treatment. Laser beams shoot pulses at the hair follicle to destroy it.

Depending on the body area and how sensitive the skin is being treated there may be some discomfort although modern laser removal procedures are virtually painless. The benefits of laser hair removal are the long lasting effects.

Although this treatment cannot be described as permanent the results of laser hair removal can last for several weeks. Useful for areas on the body that are difficult to wax and if you are tired of shaving regularly.

Teeth Whitening

Everyone loves a good smile and to make the most of yours you want shiny white teeth. The everyday effects of coffee, red wine, cigarettes and soda can dull our teeth and stain them.

These days teeth whitening is popular and very common. You can get home treatment kits however a med spa will have a stronger treatment that needs to be applied by a trained professional and the results are generally longer lasting and give a brighter white.

Body Sculpting and Contouring

This is the term used for plastic surgery or non-surgical treatments or procedures designed to improve the overall look and shape of your body.

This would include such procedures as tummy tucks and coolsculpting that is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment for reducing unwanted fat cells under the skin. For contouring procedures you would need to contact professional qualified med spas like

Microdermabrasion

If you have any sun damage, discolouration of the skin or slight scarring then this treatment can help. Basically the skin is gently sanded by a slightly abrasive tool to smooth the skin and remove any uneven and thick outer layers.

You will need to have the procedure repeated every few weeks to make continuous improvement and have between six and 12 sessions

Dermal Fillers

Hyaluronic acid is injected to reduce lines and wrinkles. It can improve the appearance and volume of the face and lips.

Although injecting acid sounds scary Hyaluronic acid or HA is a naturally occurring acid found in the human body. The acid attracts water and therefore helps rehydrate the skin and eyes. This treatment is temporary but almost instantly effective.

Facials

Facials have been around for years and are a very refreshing treatment. Totally non-surgical but less dramatic effects than a chemical peel they involve a range of treatments for your skin. They can include antioxidants and botanicals, steam, exfoliation, moisturiser, skin brightening, different types of masks and deep hydration among others.

These are some of the most popular treatments available although there are many more such as cosmetic tattooing and glycolic peels. A med spa is a way to combine the traditional treatments of a day spa such as facials and massages with the medical beauty treatments like botox and laser hair removal.

If you choose to visit a med spa look for reviews and recommendations online and from friends. Make sure they are supervised by a licensed medical health care professional and consult with them the best procedures for you to take.
